This remix of “Sometimes” was released as the lead single from the Brand New Heavies' fourth album Shelter. Being the band’s first time surfacing without lead singer N'Dea Davenport, they made a splash by embracing neo-soul courtesy of J. Dilla-kissed remix featuring a rap verse by Q-Tip and brand new lead vocalist Siedah Garrett at the helm.
The single reached the Top 20 in the US, and #3 in the UK. And according to producer Jimmy Jam, the “Sometimes” remix was the inspiration for Janet Jackson’s #1 hit “Got ‘Til It’s Gone” with Q-Tip:
J. Dilla had done a remix for a Brand New Heavies song called “Sometimes…” it that was kinda like his quintessential stop-start… it was so funky! [I thought…] “we gotta do something like that.”
