“Clarity” was released as the second single from Mayer’s second studio album, Heavier Things. In concert, Mayer has introduced the song as one “written about the first few seconds after waking up in the morning when you don’t remember all of the problems and worries in your life.”

The song features prominent contributions from the piano and drums, the latter coming in part from The Roots' drummer Questlove.
