The man has walked away from the relationship once, in pursuit of a career, but has realized how much she means to him and is now ready instead to walk the line with her for life, “just like Carter and Cash.”

In an interview with Jonn Chattman of A-Sides, Tor Miller explains how he wrote the song in LA, getting the idea from a journal he and his girlfriend would write in when he was away; their sign-off was something like what became the tagline of the song.
