Diamonds on the Water

“Diamonds on the Water” moves through a selection of musical landscapes, each with noticeably different degrees of texture.

This connects to the album’s overall “theme” of journeys. Each time the song returns to a previous musical phrase, it has changed and evolved as if going on its own miniature journey.

One constant that remains throughout the song is a percussive sound on every 4th beat of a bar. Despite the amount of reverb, it grounds the piece and prevents it from straying too far during this journey.

Speaking in an interview for Saga Magazine in 2015, Enya had this to say about the track:

We’ve always had elements of nature: “The Memory of Trees”, “A Day Without Rain”, “Echoes in Rain”. I do a lot of walking and you take that moment. “Diamonds on the Water” is from one of my walks, when the sun causes the shimmering and the diamonds on the water. It’s very visual.
