Bon Iver

The opening track of Bon Iver’s third album, 22, A Million, “22 (OVER S∞∞N)” introduces the album’s more electronic-centric sound. The song features a sample of Mahalia Jackson’s iconic live version of “How I Got Over,” as performed at the March of Washington, minutes before Martin Luther King Jr’s legendary “I Have a Dream” speech.

An extended version of the track was released as a promotional single ahead of the album.

A New York Times profile explains that each of the tracks on Bon Iver’s album features a number that’s meaningful to Justin Vernon. It goes on to describe Vernon’s fascination with the number 22:

[Vernon] has always been drawn to the number 22. While growing up and playing sports, he chose it as his sports jersey; he also, he said, sets wake-up alarms to 22 minutes after the hour. As he chopped up the phrase “It might be over soon” in the sampler, “soon” began to turn into “two, two”: 22."
