“California” is a slow and hypnotic jam produced by Niia’s faithful collaborator Robin Hannibal. In the song, Niia sings from the perspective of a woman who has moved to California for her lover but now he’s becoming distant and their relationship is falling apart.

After studying and living in New York City for a few years, Niia eventually moved to Los Angeles in order to pursue her music career. Even though it clearly seems to focus on a romantic relationship, “California” could also refer to the singer’s relationship with the music industry.

A new version of “California” featuring Compton-bred rapper Boogie was released on July 14, 2017. A music video directed by Brad Soileau for this version of the song was later posted on Niia’s YouTube channel in March 2018. It features both artists in the backseat of a car. Boogie plays Niia’s love interest who slowly – literally – fades away throughout the song.
