Showcasing the diversity of the samples on the record, “A5” draws on a 1967 track by the American rock band the Byrds, David Crosby’s “Everybody’s Been Burned.” Its trippy instrumentation and slowed-down pace accentuates the already drawn out vocals on the track, creating an atmospheric tone.

This song is sandwiched between tracks sampling two of the Jackson siblings, the Michael Jackson-driven “A4” and the Janet Jackson based “A6.” In this way it breaks up the Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis-produced songs well, providing much-needed contrast to the middle of the cassette’s first side.
