On “APESHIT,” JAY and Beyoncé flex about their luxurious lifestyles and come up, emphasizing that they are on the top of the music game. The track also bears strong thematic similarities to Jay and Kanye West track “Niggas in Paris” from their collaborative project Watch The Throne in 2011. This includes the references to coming up through the game to live a life of extreme luxury, to Beyoncé explicitly referencing lines from the project. Indeed, “going gorillas” is another way of saying that you’re going “APESHIT.”

The official music video—released the same day as EVERYTHING IS LOVE, features JAY and Beyoncé visiting Paris, specifically the Louvre museum of art. This visual adds real depth to the seemingly materialistic lyrics; as the Carters flaunt their wealth directly in front of colonial artworks, which clearly highlight the mistreatment of their African ancestors by European conquerors. The video also depicts how The Carters stand defiantly in front of the Mona Lisa, as a way of depicting how they, a couple with a combined net worth of more than a billion dollars turn around to admire a work of art that was valued at US$830 million in 2017.

A reference track for “APESHIT” was leaked shortly after the release of EVERYTHING IS LOVE. On the track, Migos member Quavo delivers the hook and first verse while fellow group mate Offset delivers the third verse.
