The song was first previewed in an Instagram post made by Thug on March 21, 2019, which featured the caption:

Five days later, affiliate Ian Connor unknowingly confirmed the song’s title as “I’m Scared” in a tweet.

This demo of “I’m Scared” leaked online on June 6, 2019. It features an extra verse from Thug that was cut from the final release in favor of a verse from 21 Savage, as well as a proper outro from Thug.
