The ambiguous, six minute long “She” can be interpreted in an array of meanings. While the song appears to touch on the protagonist spending his days picturing himself with someone other than who he’s with, the song can also take an introspective approach towards the examination of the protagonist’s gender identity.

Styles has never confirmed what exactly the song is about, which has allowed for multiple interpretations of its meaning.

With the sole utilisation of the third person point-of-view, the track introduces a man, not necessarily Styles himself, living a complicated double life. While the verses, sung from the “He” perspective, outline this man’s habitual, quotidian activities, the chorus, whose pronouns flip to the titular “She,” reveals the man’s desires to explore his concealed feminine identity. However, in an effort to mask his true feminine side, the protagonist has built up a near-impenetrable masculine façade that he worries he won’t be able to tear down.

The song is fortified by a powerfully atmospheric guitar outro by Fine Line co-creator Mitch Rowland. Styles admitted to Rolling Stone that they came up with the guitar solo during a trip on mushrooms. He added:

We had no idea what we were doing. We forgot all about that track, then went back later and loved it. But Mitch had no idea what he did on guitar that night, so he had to learn it all over from the track.
