To celebrate the announcement of her new project Be Right Back, Jorja Smith revealed her new single “Gone” on April 19, 2021, exactly one month after the release of the project’s lead single “Addicted.”

Written two years prior in Los Angeles, the English singer offers a more melancholic and delicate facet of her artistry. Accompanied by delicate piano and an electro-soul production, Jorja delivers a reflection on the way people seem to disappear from our lives – she further expanded on the overarching message during an April 2021 interview with Zane Lowe:

Actually, it’s the story of someone who left in a car accident. But like I said, the first verse might sound like a breakup. That’s what’s so interesting about music and how you interpret it so differently ‘cause maybe the world would be, when you lose someone, as horrible as it is, […] but we try to tell ourselves that’s how the world has become.

Additionally, the song’s music video brings listeners to the streets of Walsall, England – Jorja’s hometown – where she reflects on those she’s lost. The video ends with an unreleased extract of “Time,” a song that also appears on Be Right Back.
