“1” (Bill Laswell Session, 2000)

Blur

“1” was a demo recorded during the mysterious 2000 Bill Laswell sessions. The track shares many noticeable similarities with the style of Blur’s 1999 album 13, but also hints heavily to the “sound” of their 2003 album, Think Tank, the song devoid of the heavy feedback and most of the noise on 13, instead placing greater emphasis on melody and electronics, perhaps giving a hint to what Think Tank with Graham might have been like.

Interestingly, a line from the song (“What’s the matter with me?”) is used in an alternate version of the Gorillaz song “Latin Simone”. However, it’s still unknown if “1” is directly related to the song or if “1” is even a demo of the song, aside from the line. That being said, it wouldn’t be the only time a Blur demo has been reworked into a Gorillaz song (Tomorrow Comes Today). Or a hidden track (Re-Hash), on the topic of Blur tracks becoming Gorillaz songs.
