Lakecia Benjamin was born and raised in Washington Heights, Manhattan. She originally trained in Latin salsa and merengue stylings, before moving on to a focus on jazz. Her primary instrument is the saxophone and her skill has landed her playing with greats including Alicia Keys, The Roots, and Stevie Wonder. Her most recent release, Pursuance: The Coltranes pays homage to legendary jazz songwriters John & Alice Coltrane.
