Janae Nierah Wherry (born April 15, 1998), known professionally as Sexyy Red, is a rapper residing from St. Louis, Missouri.

In an interview with Complex, she explained the backstory behind her stage name, in which she states:

My name was already Red, because I used to wear red hair and red stuff all the time. That was my name from middle school, because I had red hair ever since then. When I was trying to upload my song that I had just recorded when I started rapping, I didn’t know what name I should use, and my cameraman was like, “What about Sexyy Red, because you’re sexy and your name’s Red?” I’m like, “Okay. I like that.” We was putting different stuff in front of Red at first, but then when he said Sexyy, I’m like, “I like that.” It fits.

Sexyy Red first started rapping after her ex-boyfriend cheated on her, in which she decided to write a diss song against her now ex-boyfriend. She would release her first song “Ah Thousand Jugs” in 2018. After had releasing a slew of singles, Sexyy Red released her debut mixtape, Ghetto Superstar in 2021.

Entering into 2023, Sexyy Red released the single “Pound Town” with Tay Keith, which went insanely viral on social media, mainly due to its sexuality. Red would then collaborate with NLE Choppa on the official remix to “SLUT ME OUT.” Thanks to the success of “Pound Town,” Red would release an official remix with Nicki Minaj, in which she earned her first entry on the Billboard Hot 100.

Sexyy Red would then release her second mixtape, Hood Hottest Princess, on June 9, 2023, to which it earned commercial success. The mixtape debuted and peaked at #62 on the Billboard 200. Songs such as “SkeeYee,” “Looking For The Hoes (Ain’t My Fault),” and “Hellcat SRTs” would all help Sexyy Red’s career into stardom, as these tracks went viral through social media. In October 2023, Sexyy would land a spot on Drake’s For All The Dogs, on the track “Rich Baby Daddy” with SZA.

She has stated that she was inspired by male rappers, such as Project Pat, Juicy J, and Gucci Mane, and describes her music as “bad” and “ratchet.”
