The Parliaments (formed in 1955 by group leader George Clinton) were a doo-wop group from New Jersey. They began singing songs in the backrooms of a barbershop owned by Clinton in the city of Plainfield.

They jumped around from label to label before releasing a hit single called “(I Wanna) Testify” with Revilot Records in 1967. Eventually, a legal dispute with the label over ownership forced Clinton to change the name to Parliament. And the rest is history…
