“The Hillbillies” is a collaboration between Baby Keem and Kendrick Lamar on which they go back and forth, comparing themselves to Neymar and Messi respectively. The cousins rap about designer clothes, women, and their fame over an upbeat, Jersey club-inspired sample of Bon Iver’s “PDLIF.”

The song marks Kendrick’s second high-profile collaboration of 2023 following “AMERICA HAS A PROBLEM” with Beyoncé.

The song was unexpectedly released on the pgLang YouTube channel on May 30, 2023, alongside a music video directed by Neal Farmer. The song would later release on streaming platforms on June 5, 2023.

There is reason to believe that this track is a subliminal diss towards Drake.

Upon its release, fans noted similarities between Baby Keem’s flow on this track and Drake’s flow from his June 2022 song “Sticky,” with Keem himself calling the track “Baby Keem & Kendrick Lamar – The Hillbillies (Sticky Dub)” via Twitter. Some have interpreted the similarities between the two songs as a diss, potentially adding fuel to Drake and Kendrick’s longstanding beef, with others calling it a tribute.

The song’s music video also features a cameo from Tyler, the Creator, who teases the return of his Camp Flog Gnaw festival. Notably, Drake was booed off stage at the festival in 2019.

Days later, Kendrick performed his verse on Pusha T’s song “Nosetalgia” for the first time at a performance in Barcelona, Spain. Pusha notably beefed with Drake in 2018, culminating in the release of “The Story of Adidon” on which he revealed that Drake had a kid.
